New health and safety regulations for waste management companies

It has been announced there are to be some new guidelines and guidance for waste management companies in the future to prevent any accidents, injuries or even deaths which can occur when individuals are sheltering inside bins.

The Health and Safety Executive, who oversee health and safety in England and Wales for the majority of different organisations has said that three individuals have been found dead when the waste bins have been taken to the waste disposal depot, after the bins were unloaded and emptied.

Sheltering in bins is obviously not advisable, but for some individuals it is the only way to receive shelter from bad weather or the cold when they are living on the street. In some instances, individuals have been drunk on a night out and have fallen asleep inside a bin. This is all very dangerous behaviour which is why the HSE also with the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) have joined forces to produce a piece of guidance that offers common sense measures to avoid any further incidents of death or injury.

Waste management companies have a responsibility to ensure that any individual, regardless of whether they are working for the company or not are not injured through the removal and disposal of waste.
