Putting a stop to fortnightly rubbish collection

Many householders have been frustrated over previous years about the fact that some councils in England and Wales only collect household waste every two weeks. With most family household sizes averaging between four and six people, the amount of waste that is accumulated over 2 weeks in enormous and it is not practical or safe to leave rubbish for that long when waiting for it to be collected.

However, the Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles yesterday has clearly stated that he does not want to see Council’s being pressurised into abandoning weekly bin collection services. This brings a welcomed sign of relief by many householders who are fed up with their piling mountain of rubbish. Waste management companies will be allowed to get on with their job properly again.

Mr Pickles has said that he will be writing to the Audit Commission and instructing them to withdraw the guidance to local authorities encouraging them to move to a fortnightly collections service. Mr Pickles is coming across at being extremely forthright when it comes to the Audit Commission as they have had a number of clashes since the Coalition Government came into power on May 6.
