NLWA receives record-breaking £250m PFI award from DEFRA
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has recently announced that one of the largest amounts of Private Finance Initiative funding is to go to the North London Waste Authority (NLWA). The ultimate aim is to support waste disposal London services, increase recycling and boost eco-friendly, efficient waste management in the nation’s capital.
The NLWA, responsible for seven North London boroughs, will receive over £250 million in PFI funding, one of the largest amounts ever awarded for a waste management project. Why such a considerable sum? The government believe that the NLWA and its projects will eventually be worth around £480 million in the long-term.
The waste authority plans to invest effort and funds in:
- Anaerobic digestion facilities
- Developing new materials recovery plants (to sort recyclables)
- Facilities to sort waste that cannot be recycled
- Revamping Household Waste & Recycling Centres (HWRCs)
Targets
The government and the NLWA have many waste disposal targets for North London, and only until 2020 to achieve them. These include:
- A 50% recycling rate (currently standing at 28%)
- Cutting recyclable material sent to landfill from 36% to just 15%
By the year 2045, the NLWA aims to recycle around 3% of the national waste generated, making it one of the most valuable waste management projects in Western Europe.
