Belfast’s Big Spring Clean a sparkling success
The last week or so has been extremely busy for a number of Belfast’s eco-warriors, as they attempted to clean up Northern Ireland in just ten days during the Big Spring Clean, which ended last weekend. More than 2,000 people took part in 55 cleaning-related events over this period, all organised by Tidy Northern Ireland and the Belfast Telegraph.
Using skip hire, bin bags, an arsenal of cleaning equipment and everything else at their disposal, the volunteers worked tirelessly to clean up their local areas. For example:
• 80 bin bags full of fly-tipped junk was cleared up by 150 volunteers, who managed to cover miles of country roads in just one day
• The Whiteabbey shore was cleaned up by alternative spiritual group The Pagan Journey, who picked up litter and dumped tyres from the shore line
• A group of green-friendly teenagers tackled rubbish clearance at an estate in Coleraine
Although the 10-day nationwide event has officially ended, there are still more clean-up events planned for the coming weeks and months as people in Northern Ireland continue to embrace the spirit of spring cleaning.
