Reviews of waste management announced

The environment secretary, Caroline Spellman has been announcing the reviews which will be taking place to look into the waste policies that currently existing within the UK, in particular England.

With so much waste being sent to landfill sites, the new government are keen to tackle the problem and will be looking into more effective ways of reducing the amount of rubbish we produce. In addition to looking into household waste, they will also be looking at commercial waste which does considerably add a significant amount of rubbish to the overall figure.

Caroline Spellman said yesterday that ‘We need a new approach to waste – one which works for the new economy. We cannot keep putting recyclable and biodegradable material into landfill. It threatens the environment and wastes what are incredibly valuable natural resources.’

With many local authorities clued up when it comes to recycling, it is the encouragement of local residents which may take some persuasion. Not everybody is clear on what can and cannot be recycled and in order to achieve better recycling records, individuals need to be better informed.
