Britain’s recycling record is appalling
According to recent reports, the average recycling rate in Britain is a mere 18%. This is appalling considering how much waste we produce as a country and how much effort many manufacturers are now going to, to ensure that their packaging is recyclable.
Most councils in England and Wales are facilitating recycling and they collect your recycling when they collect your general household rubbish. For some councils, you don’t even need to separate the recyclable items into different boxes, you can put paper, tins and plastics all together and your non recyclables in your other bin. It couldn’t be any easier and there really is no excuse for not recycling.
When the recycling is collected it goes to a special facility to be sorted and processed before it is sent off to be melted down and made into new products. This facility is called the Materials Recycling Facility or MRF. The MRF ensures that no materials are included with recycling that cannot be reused and similarly, they check regular household waste to make sure nothing has been put into regular household waste by accident. This does not mean that you should not recycle however, wherever possible you should recycle your waste.
